Chapter Fifteen

Thursday evening

It took me a moment to put two and two together. “Are you . . . are you sure?”

James nodded. “Yes, pretty sure. Let me explain. Anming works for TNC—a nanotech company that suspects its technology is being stolen by Chinese spies—and she’s a prime suspect. Her husband, who we thought was in China, turns out to be living in New York, the same city as her. Then, as the company and we are getting closer to nailing the suspect, Han disappears under extremely strange circumstances, with the Chinese government claiming he went back home. And when you start to dig deeper to find the truth, Chinese assassins are trying to eliminate you.”

I nodded slowly, and a frown spread across my face. “Han’s a nanotech student at NYU.”

“Bingo. He didn’t have to be, in order to give Anming a hand. But the fact that they’re both in the same field makes it easier to understand, steal, and hide the software and the technology pieces, codes, or whatever’s necessary to make the prototype work. And if these pictures place Han in San Francisco at the same time as Anming and the other suspect, we’ve pretty much tied them together.”

“But . . . can’t this be just a coincidence?”

James shook his head. “It’s a series of strange coincidences, surrounded by lies and violence.”

“Yes. One of Han’s roommates was roughed up by one of the men in these photos.” I tapped the tablet and found the pictures’ folder. I began to look through the pictures. “And they threatened Randy, the other roommate.”

I found the photo and showed it to James. Then I told him more details about my case, what I had learned from MeiLi and Randy.

James listened carefully, then said, “There, you have more connections. Something must have gone so seriously wrong that Han disappeared, and these criminals are supposed to clean up the mess and erase all traces. That’s why they’re extremely unhappy with you digging into what happened and trying to find the truth.”

“Maybe Han made a mistake, and the Chinese decided to eliminate him before he became a liability and could be connected to them.”

“Yes, it could be. They wouldn’t want another scandal, considering DOJ’s investigations into senior Chinese government officials suspected of corporate espionage.”

I nodded slowly. I had read in the papers about the high-profile case. The Chinese government, of course, was denying all charges and had no intention of helping with the investigation. “So, what should be our next steps, James?”

He drew in a deep sigh. “I hate to do this to you, Jenn, but this case is becoming way too dangerous for you—”

“No, James, I’m not handing over the case to the NYPD.”

“Jenn, let me finish. I wasn’t going to suggest that. I’m just pointing out what you already know: that you need to be careful. And I know how stubborn you are,” he said in a warm voice and gave me a big smile, so I wouldn’t misunderstand him.

“Determined, not stubborn.”

“All right, determined—as you stubbornly insist.
